After the Quran's revelation, especially during the late period of the Umayyads' and the early period of the Abbasids, the Arabic script started to develop and flourish as a form of calligraphy art. Various types of writings (scripts) have emerged. Writings have been transformed from the early writings, especially those pertaining to the Mushafs (Qur‟ans), namely Kûfi script, which had corner-like characteristics into curvy shapes named the Mansub scripts era. The “Aklâm-i sitta” six famous genres which developed, were selected from the Mensub scripts, after obtaining clear rules and proportions. The subject of this thesis is an important branch of the Aklâm-i sitte, named Al- Muhaqqaq. It outlines the stages of development from its birth until this very day. It also discusses the fact that this script has passed through a stoppage period for several centuries. It will define its features, its areas of usage and the eras in which it was used, as well as the most famous calligraphers who have written in it. These are some of the topics which this research tackles. This thesis is considered to be one of the few, rare theses which research the Muhaqqaq script. Mushafs (Qur‟ans) were written using this script over a period spanning approximately three centuries (13th, 14th, and 15th centuries). Important examples have been highlighted which were written by the hands of the most skillful calligraphers. Moreover, information has been given about each Mushaf clarifying its features, type of writing methodology, in addition to giving information about the calligraphers who wrote them, their lives, their style of art and their students. The Muhaqqaq script has passed through a period of manifestation followed by one of discontinuity over several centuries. However, in the mid twentieth century, there was an interest to revive it again. In the thesis, the reasons behind recently returning back to this script were clarified. The linear writing system was clarified as well as the composite writing system. Due to the similarities between the Muhaqqaq and Thuluth and Reyhânî scripts, which all belong to the Aklâm-i sitta, a comparison was made between them, highlighting the differences as well as similarities, aided with examples in order to avoid falling into errors and mistakes. Hence, this research has become a reference for calligraphers and researchers. The thesis also highlights terminology in calligraphy which is simlar to the Muhaqqaq in order to distinguish between them, such as the Mu‟annak, Muhaqqaq Al Khafi, Thuluth Mursal.en_US
