Smyrna Rest: Anadolu’da Protestan Rum Misyonunun Yeniden Doğuşu

Abstract

Osmanlı topraklarında Batı dünyasının dinamikleriyle yeni yöntemler kullanan, siyasi, iktisadi çıkarları dini çıkarlarla buluşturan Protestan misyoner faaliyetleri, özellikle, gayrimüslim tebaa arasından devşirilen Protestan cemaatler ortaya çıkardı. Eğitim, hayırseverlik, sağlık hizmetleri gibi yöntemlerle ilerleyen misyonerler, Rumlar arasında bekledikleri başarıyı elde edemeyince 1880’lerde İzmir’de, şehrin eğlence mekanları arasında açtıkları Smyrna Rest ile bir başarı yakaladıklarını fark ettiler. Bu makalede, Smyrna Rest adlı mekân üzerinden yenilenen Protestan Rum misyonun, sosyal ve siyasi sebep ve sonuçlarıyla anlaşılması amaçlandı. Söz konusu yeni yöntem karşısında Ortodoks Kilisesi ile Osmanlı idaresinin tepkisi sorgulandı. Osmanlı ve İngiliz arşiv belgeleri, seyyah, misyoner anlatıları ile Rum Evanjelik Cemiyeti’nin raporları değerlendirildi.

The Protestant missionaries who, progressed with methods such as education, philanthropy, health services brought together political and economic interests with religious interests in the Ottoman lands. After they could not achieve the success what they expected among the Greeks, as a new method they opened the Smyrna Rest in Izmir in the 1880s. To understand the renewed Protestant Greek mission through the place called Smyrna Rest was aimed. The reactions of the Orthodox Church and the Ottoman administration against this new method were questioned. Ottoman and British archive documents, traveler and missionary narratives, the Greek Evangelical Society reports were evaluated.
