Geleneksel Konut Mimarisinde İskoçya Kara Evleri

Abstract

İskoçya'nın adalar topluluğu, dünya genelindeki pek çok toplumda olduğu gibi, tarih boyunca barınma ihtiyacını kapalı mekanlarla, yani konutlarla karşılamıştır. Bu bağlamda, Hebridler, İskoçya’nın batı kıyılarında zengin kültürel, tarihi ve ik-limsel özelliklere sahip bir adalar topluluğu olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Hebrid Ada-ları, binlerce yıl öncesine uzanan tarih, kültür ve geleneksel konut örnekleriyle doludur. İskoçya'nın geleneksel konutlarına dair önemli bir örnek olan “kara ev-ler”, genellikle basit ve dikdörtgen plan tipine sahiptir. Bu yapıların girişleri, doğ-rudan erişim sağlayan bir ambar ile birleştirilmiştir. Orta alanda oturma odası yer almakta olup, bu odanın bitişiğinde bir yatak odası bulunmaktadır. Bu plan tipine göre, kara evleri genellikle üç ana odadan oluşmaktadır; oturma odası ve ahır ara-sında yalnızca kısmi bir bölme mevcut olup, bu durum hayvanlar ile insanların aynı ortamı paylaşmasını zorunlu kılmaktadır. Günümüzde ise bu konutlar, daha çok müze ve turizm amaçlı kullanılmakta ve hayvanlara ayrılan alanlar evlerin dışında konumlandırılmaktadır. Kara evler, yerel halk tarafından geleneksel mi-marinin tipik özelliklerinden biri olan yerel malzemeler kullanılarak inşa edilmiş-tir. Bu evlerin oturma odasının ortasında sürekli yanan bir turba ateşi bulunması, yapıların karakteristik unsurlarından biridir. 20. yüzyıl ortalarına kadar, bu evlerde ateşten çıkan dumanın dışarı tahliye edilmesini sağlamaya yönelik bir baca bulun-mamaktaydı. Genellikle çatıda küçük bir delik bırakılarak veya sazın içine balık fıçısı yerleştirilerek dumanın dışarı atılması sağlanmaktaydı. Bu koşullar altında çim ve saz kaplı çatılar, ateşin yaydığı duman ve gazlarla kısa sürede kararır; bu durum, bu evlerin “kara evler” olarak adlandırılmasına katkıda bulunmuştur. “Kara ev” adının kökenine dair bir diğer teori ise, 1800’lerin sonlarında inşa edil-meye başlanan ve “beyaz evler” olarak adlandırılan yeni konutlarla yapılan karşı-laştırmalar sonucunda “kara evler” adıyla anıldığı yönündedir. Dış Hebridler’deki Lewis Adası, kara evlerin en iyi örneklerinden biri olarak gösterilebilir. The island community of Scotland, like many societies around the world, has his-torically met the need for shelter with enclosed spaces, namely dwellings. In this context, the Hebrides stand out as a group of islands along Scotland's west coast, rich in cultural, historical, and climatic features. The Hebridean Islands are filled with a history, culture, and traditional housing examples that date back thousands of years. An important example of traditional Scottish housing is the 'black hou-ses,' which typically possess a simple and rectangular floor plan. The entrances of these buildings are combined with a storage area that allows for direct access. In the center, there is a living room, adjacent to which is a bedroom. According to this floor plan, the black houses generally consist of three main rooms; between the living room and the stable, there is only a partial partition, which necessitates sharing the same space with animals. Nowadays, these dwellings are primarily used for museum and tourism purposes, and areas designated for animals are lo-cated outside the houses. The black houses were constructed using local materials, which is a typical characteristic of traditional architecture by the local people. One of the characteristic features of these houses is the continuously burning peat fire located in the center of the living room. Until the mid-20th century, there was no chimney in these houses to vent the smoke from the fire outside. Smoke was ty-pically vented either through a small hole left in the roof or by placing a fish barrel in the thatch. Under these conditions, the thatched roofs would quickly darken due to the smoke and gases emitted by the fire; this contributed to the naming of these homes as 'black houses.' Another theory regarding the origin of the term 'black house' is that it was named in comparison to new dwellings built in the late 1800s, known as 'white houses.' Lewis Island in the Outer Hebrides can be shown as one of the best examples of black houses. The Outer Hebrides, also known as the Wes-tern Isles, are located in the northwest of Scotland and are notable for this histo-rical and cultural heritage. In this context, the traditional dwellings of the Hebrides offer significant areas for examination, not only in architectural terms but also from a socio-cultural perspective.
